As photographers and videographers we’re with the bride and groom right from the moment they start getting ready right through to them grooving away on the dance-floor and after spending so much time with so many happy couples on their big days we’ve compiled ten top insider wedding tips to help you on your wedding day! So here goes…
1. Timings almost never stay completely on schedule – some things will take longer than you thought, some will take less time. At the end of the day though everything always works out just fine so don’t get too hung up on it or let it stress you out and ruin your day!
2. Some things will probably not go quite as you planned – No matter how meticulously you have planned the day there are almost certainly going to be one or two things that aren’t quite how you expected them or that have a slight imperfection to them. IT DOESN’T MATTER!!! Your guests will never know and it’s not worth getting stressed about. Go with the flow or you will only ruin part of your day and even if it does upset you for a moment, whatever you do don’t let it continue to play on your mind and spoil the rest of the day!
3. Leave more time for group photographs, the reality is it will take longer than you think! – The Photographer can give you a rough estimate of how long they think they can theoretically get through all the group shots but they can’t fully account for how your guests will be on the day. If everyone refuses to look at the camera or if people insist on standing in the background of the shot who shouldn’t be there or if the next person you need for a group has gone off to the bar and can’t be found then it will take longer than you anticipated. Try to build some extra time into your schedule just in case the groups do overrun.
4. Rain will not spoil your day unless you start thinking it will – Unless you’re having an outdoor ceremony then everyone will enjoy themselves just as much come rain or come shine. We’ve seen Brides burst into tears at the sight of dark clouds gathering only for them to quickly discover that actually the day was just as perfect regardless of the weather. We live in a country where the climate is at times unpredictable, don’t let that stand in the way of you having the best day of your lives.
5. Don’t stress about the dress – Of course you want to look beautiful and perfect on your big day but spending all your time worrying about whether the dress might get messed up will impair your enjoyment of the day. Everyone will forever remember that first moment they saw you walk down the aisle looking so beautiful and that is the memory they will hold onto. Don’t worry so much about it getting a little dirty after that point, once this day is done it will probably just be going away into a cupboard somewhere anyway.
6. Your guests don’t want to be impressed they want to have fun – Having a beautiful, extravagant, no expense spared wedding is fantastic if that’s something that’s important to you, but just remember your wedding day is not about impressing your guests it’s about everyone enjoying an amazing day of celebrations together. Your guests are more likely to remember crazily partying away on the dance floor than how pretty your table centres were and they can have just as much fun in a barn as a castle. If you want your wedding to leave a lasting impression make it the most fun wedding anyone’s ever been to, those are the memories that truly last!
and on that note…
7. Don’t plan your wedding for anyone else - When it comes to weddings everyone has an opinion but at the end of the day your voices are the only ones that really matter. Make it your day, no-one else’s and do it the way you really want to do it. By all means take on board other people’s advice but don’t let it become someone else’s wedding day, you only get to do it once!
8. The last 45 minutes of getting ready absolutely flies by – don’t leave everything until the last minute or you will end up running late which only puts more stress on you and prevents you from enjoying your morning.
9. Trust your photographer - Forget any preconceptions about photography, you’re paying a professional because they are experts in the field. Allow them the freedom to take the type of photos you booked them for and just focus on enjoying the moment with your new hubby or wifey!
10. Let loose and party! – You might not have the chance to talk to everyone at your wedding but it’s your day and you want to make sure you really enjoy it. If you don’t manage to get all the way around the room don’t worry, just enjoy yourselves! The guests want you to have the best day of your lives too and they will understand if you don’t get the chance to speak to them, just make sure you don’t forget to have a great time yourselves!
